Landscaping in Castleford
Landscaping is about turning a garden into a space you actually use. Affordable Gardens & Landscapes offers all aspects of landscaping for homes across Castleford, including Indian stone patios, pathways, block paving and driveways, gravelling, turfing, artificial grass and complete garden makeovers. We are a family run, fully insured business based in nearby Knottingley, and we also take on landscaping for commercial customers, such as the frontage of a shop or office. Every project starts with how you want to use the garden: somewhere to sit out in the evening, a lawn for children, a low-maintenance space that looks smart all year, or simply a layout that works better than the one you inherited.
Ideas from Castleford's own stone
Castleford's older landmarks are a useful starting point when choosing materials. Castleford Bridge, built between 1805 and 1808 to carry the A656 over the River Calder, and All Saints Church, from 1866, are both sandstone, while the 18th century gate piers at Fryston Hall Farm are magnesian limestone. If you live in an older stone or brick house, warm-toned paving tends to sit more comfortably beside it than bright, modern finishes. Indian stone is a popular choice for patios partly because it comes in a range of natural shades, from soft buffs and browns to cooler greys, so it can be matched to the house and the walls around it. Bring photos of anything you like the look of and we can talk it through when we visit.
Patios and paths on heavy ground
Carboniferous Coal Measures underlie most of the Castleford area, and where their shales and mudstones leave a garden with heavy, slow-draining soil, a patio or path has to be planned with that in mind. That means a solid sub-base, a gentle fall so rainwater runs away from the house, and somewhere sensible for that water to go. Get it wrong and puddles sit on the surface, or slabs start to rock and settle unevenly. We look at the ground, the levels and where water collects after rain before suggesting a layout, and talk through whether a patio, block paving or a gravel area suits each part of the garden best. Gravel is often the easiest answer for a damp corner, because water soaks through it rather than running off.
Lawns, turf and artificial grass
A tired, patchy lawn can be lifted and replaced with new turf, which gives you a green, usable lawn far sooner than sowing seed. Turf laid on properly prepared ground, cleared of stones and old roots, levelled and firmed, roots in far better than turf rolled straight onto compacted soil. For a shaded yard, a heavily used play area or a garden where mowing has become a chore, artificial grass is worth considering. It stays green all year and needs no cutting, though it still needs a sound, well-drained base to stop it lifting or holding puddles, and leaves still need clearing from it in autumn. We can talk through which suits your garden, and how much of it to turf, gravel or pave.
New-build plots, older gardens and driveways
Castleford has new housing on former industrial land. The Nestlé factory, which made Toffee Crisp and After Eights, closed in 2012, and its demolition began in 2014 to make way for homes. New-build gardens are often handed over as a rectangle of turf and a fence, which makes them a blank canvas: a patio by the back doors, a path to the shed and a gravelled border can transform them. An older garden often needs the opposite: tired paving lifted, levels sorted and the layout reworked for the way you live now. At the front, block paving or gravel can turn a garden into a driveway, and a new path to the front door makes a house look cared for from the street. Think about drainage at the front too, because a driveway that sheds rain onto the pavement or towards the house causes problems, so falls and edges are part of the plan from the start. A complete garden makeover pulls all of this into one plan.
Planning a landscaping job
Call 07347 572509, Monday to Friday between 9am and 6pm, to ask for a quote. We will come out, look at the garden, the levels and the access, and talk through ideas with you. A larger makeover can often be planned as one design and carried out in stages. If a new boundary is part of the plan, see fencing in Castleford, and once the work is finished, regular garden maintenance in Castleford can keep it looking its best.
