About Outwood
Outwood sits on the A61 Leeds Road between Wakefield and Leeds, with Lofthouse just to the north. It began as a pit village and stayed small until the 1970s, when new housing joined it up with Wrenthorpe and Stanley. Its name comes from the medieval Out Wood, and old routes into that wood live on in local names such as Lofthouse Gate and Carr Gate. Pinderfields, on the slopes between the Outwood and the River Calder, takes its name from the pounds where stray animals were once held.
We cover Outwood's main road and the streets off it, the estate around King George Street and Outwood Park, and the newer housing towards Wrenthorpe and Stanley. If you are just outside, towards Lofthouse or Carr Gate, call and ask. Outwood is not one of Wakefield's conservation areas, so most garden fences and front gardens follow the national planning rules, but listed buildings and newer estates can carry their own conditions.
