Outwood grew up as a pit village on the A61 between Wakefield and Leeds, north of the city centre and just south of Lofthouse. It stayed small until the 1970s, when new house building made it grow and merge with Wrenthorpe and Stanley. That history shows in the gardens. Older properties line Leeds Road, a post-war council estate sits around King George Street, and newer housing spreads out on either side, so an overgrown garden here could be almost any shape or size.
Affordable Gardens & Landscapes is a family run, fully insured business based in Knottingley, and Outwood is part of the area we cover for garden clearance and tidy ups. We cut overgrown gardens back, clear them, and take the garden waste away with us.
Gardens behind Leeds Road
Leeds Road runs through the centre of Outwood for over a mile, and the oldest buildings, including its pubs and the parish church of St Mary Magdalene, dating from 1858, stand along it. A garden behind a property on a main road like this brings its own practical questions. Where can the van stop without blocking traffic or a bus stop? Is there a side passage or a back lane, or does everything come out through the house? Those answers set how long the job takes, so they are worth sorting before the day.
On a long, narrow plot, the clearance usually starts at the house end so a route is opened up, then works down the garden, with cut material bagged as it goes rather than left in heaps.
Estate gardens, old and new
King George Street runs through a post-war council estate laid out in the garden city style, and much of the rest of Outwood came later, as the village spread from the 1970s onwards. Part of the old Lofthouse pit site, closed in 1981, is now a housing estate too.
Gardens on newer housing tend to get left for different reasons to older ones: a busy few years, a lawn that never really took, or shrubs planted when the house was new that have since grown into each other and over the path. The clearance is the same in principle: cut back, clear, take away. On a modern plot the boundaries are often close, though, so care goes into cutting next to a neighbour's fence and not leaving their side covered in clippings.
The old Out Wood and what grows back
Outwood takes its name from a medieval wood that covered much of the northern part of Stanley township, running up to Lofthouse and Ardsley. Court records from the time mention oak, elm, alder, ash, birch, hawthorn, holly, hazel and maple, and the land kept its open, common character until an Act of Parliament in 1793 divided it into private fields.
Gardens left alone have a way of heading back in that direction. Brambles, nettles and woody shrubs move in first, and within a few seasons a lawn can turn to scrub. A clearance takes that growth back to the ground, removes what can be lifted at the root, and leaves the garden ready to be used again. Established trees are different: we do not do tree work, so they stay put and we clear around them.
Timing, nesting and the green edges of Outwood
Outwood sits close to open green space, with Outwood Park in the middle of the district and Lofthouse Colliery Nature Park, a former colliery turned into a small country park with a heather-rich meadow and a pond, a short way north. Hedges and thick shrubs in gardens near spaces like these are natural nesting spots. It is an offence to intentionally damage or destroy a wild bird's nest while it is in use or being built, so in spring and summer we look before cutting into dense growth, and any section with an active nest is left until later.
Autumn and winter avoid that question altogether, and the shape of the garden is easier to read once growth has died back.
What happens on the day
We start with a walk round so you can point out anything to keep, such as a shrub, a rose or a path you suspect is under the grass. Then the garden is cut back in stages, beds and borders are cleared, cuttings are bagged and loaded, and hard surfaces are swept. The garden waste leaves in the van with us.
Trevour Bowden's Facebook review describes the kind of result people are after: "cleared our very overgrown gardens very happy with the service very hardworking polite team nothing was to much for them".
