What regular garden maintenance covers
A garden rarely needs one big job. It needs little and often: the grass cut before it gets away, the edges kept sharp, the weeds pulled before they seed and the shrubs kept from swallowing the path. Regular garden maintenance from Affordable Gardens & Landscapes takes care of that routine for you, so the garden looks cared for all year rather than for a few days after a weekend of hard work.
A typical visit can include mowing the lawn, strimming and edging, weeding borders and gravel, trimming hedges and shrubs, deadheading, sweeping paths and patios, and clearing up leaves and clippings. You choose what matters most. Some people want the lawn and edges done and nothing else, others want the whole garden kept in order. We look after private gardens and commercial grounds, and if your site is a business, our commercial garden maintenance page explains how we work around staff, customers and opening times.
Signs your garden would benefit from regular visits
- The lawn is long again almost as soon as you have cut it.
- Weeds are coming up through the patio joints and the gravel.
- Shrubs are leaning over paths or creeping across windows.
- Every free weekend goes on catching up rather than enjoying the garden.
- You are away a lot, work long hours, or find the heavier jobs harder than you used to.
- You are looking after a relative's garden as well as your own.
On that last point, as one customer put it in a review: "highly recommended did a brilliant job of my mums garden".
How a maintenance visit runs
- A first conversation. You call 07347 572509 and tell us about the garden, what you want kept on top of and roughly how often.
- A look at the garden. We walk round with you and note the size of the lawn, the borders, the hedges and any awkward access.
- A quote and a plan. You get a quote, and we agree the jobs each visit covers and how often we come.
- The visits. Each visit works through the list: lawn, edges, weeding, trimming and a tidy of the hard surfaces.
- Leaving it tidy. Clippings are swept up and paths are left clear before we go.
- Adjusting through the year. If the garden needs a bit more in spring or a leaf clear-up in autumn, we talk it through with you first.
If the garden has become badly overgrown, it usually makes sense to start with a one-off garden clearance and tidy up and then keep it in shape with regular visits.
Garden maintenance through the seasons
Spring. The grass starts growing again, borders need clearing of winter debris, and a first cut and edge sets the lawn up for the year. It is also the time to get on top of weeds before anything sets seed.
Summer. This is the busiest part of the year for any lawn. Mowing is at its most frequent, hedges put on growth and weeds come through quickly in warm, damp spells. Regular visits stop the garden racing away from you during the holidays.
Autumn. Growth slows, leaves drop onto lawns, paths and gravel, and borders need cutting back. Clearing leaves keeps the grass healthier and stops paths turning slippery.
Winter. There is less to cut, but a tidy of beds, paths and patios keeps the garden presentable. Lawns are best left alone while they are frozen or waterlogged, so winter visits concentrate on everything else. It is also a good time to plan any bigger jobs for the year ahead, such as a new fence, a patio or a lawn that needs replacing.
What affects the scope of a maintenance plan
There is no single standard visit, because no two gardens are the same. The things that shape what each visit involves include:
- the size of the lawn and how many separate areas of grass there are
- how many borders, beds and gravel areas need weeding
- the length and height of the hedges, and how much shrub trimming there is
- access, such as whether everything comes through the house or there is a side gate
- how often you want visits, and whether that changes with the seasons
- the condition of the garden when we start
We talk all of this through when we visit and quote for the work you actually want, rather than a fixed package.
