Regular garden maintenance in Knottingley
Regular maintenance means a garden that never needs rescuing. Our visits cover the normal jobs that keep a garden looking good: grass cutting, edging, hedge cutting and shrub trimming, weeding and a general tidy of paths and borders. Affordable Gardens & Landscapes is a family run, fully insured business based in Knottingley, and we look after gardens across the town and Ferrybridge for residential and commercial customers. You decide how often we come, and we plan each visit around what the garden needs at that point in the year. For commercial customers, that might mean keeping the outside of a business, a block of flats or a rented house presentable, with verges cut, hedges in shape and entrances clear of weeds.
New estates on the southern edge of town
Knottingley is growing. Off Womersley Road on the southern edge of town, Jackson's Landing has been built in phases on the site where brothers Tom and John Jackson once ran Jackson's Glassworks, and Vistry started work in 2025 on a 218-home development off the same road, due to be finished by 2029. Persimmon's Glassworks development on Common Lane is adding more family homes. Gardens on estates like these often start with fresh turf front and back and very little else, and the first couple of years are when a lawn either thickens up or thins and fills with weeds. Steady mowing at a sensible height, crisp edges and early weeding make the difference. Where a new garden backs onto a field or hedgerow, seed blows in from the boundary every summer, so the fence line needs as much attention as the lawn.
Hedges, hedgerows and wildlife
Persimmon describes its Glassworks site as sitting beside hedgerows and a protected newt habitat, with Willow Garth nature reserve and the River Aire nearby. Gardens close to places like that need a little thought. We look for nesting birds before trimming, and the main hedge cut is best timed for late summer or autumn, after the busiest nesting months. A light trim keeps a hedge in shape, while one that has got out of hand may need reducing over two seasons rather than in one go so it does not end up bare. Garden hedges cut regularly stay dense and manageable, and keeping the base clear of leaves and weeds helps them stay healthy from the bottom up. Where a garden borders a wild area, leaving a rougher strip along the boundary can be kinder to wildlife than cutting everything tight, and we are happy to work that way if you would like.
Lawns on rich ground
The ground here is fertile. Ferrybridge and Knottingley sit on what is described as rich soil, so grass and weeds both grow quickly. During the main growing season, from spring through to early autumn, most lawns here look best cut every week or two. Short, frequent cuts give a thicker lawn than long gaps followed by a severe trim, and the clippings disappear back into the grass. Mowing a waterlogged lawn marks and compacts it, so after heavy rain a cut may move by a day. Once autumn arrives, the work turns to raking leaves, a last cut and putting the borders to bed; through winter, a visit every few weeks is usually plenty.
Smaller gardens and a helping hand
Not every garden needs a full afternoon. A small front garden, a back yard or a patch of shared grass might only need a short visit to cut, weed and tidy, while a larger garden might take a few hours. Regular maintenance is particularly useful when looking after the garden has started to feel like too much, whether because of work, health or getting older. One customer said we “did a brilliant job of my mums garden”, and keeping a parent's garden tidy is one of the simplest ways to take a weight off their mind. You do not need to be at home for most visits, as long as we can get into the garden. If you are away for a few weeks in summer, a couple of visits while you are gone means coming home to a cut lawn instead of a meadow.
Getting started
If the garden is already overgrown, we can begin with a one-off garden clearance in Knottingley and then keep it under control with regular visits. Call 07347 572509, Monday to Friday between 9am and 6pm. Let us know the size of the garden, the kind of visits you have in mind and how we get in, and we will arrange to see it and quote. Our main regular garden maintenance page has more detail, and our Knottingley page covers everything else we do here.
