Fencing in Knottingley
A fence is one of those jobs you only want to do once. Affordable Gardens & Landscapes is a family run, fully insured business based in Knottingley, and we take on fencing jobs across the town and Ferrybridge. Each one begins with a look at the boundary and a chat about what you want it to do: privacy, a safe space for children or dogs, shelter from the wind, a smarter look from the street, or all of those at once. We also cover the details that are easy to forget, like where a gate should go, whether to leave a small gap at the base for hedgehogs and which side of the fence you want facing your garden.
Roads, rail and privacy
Knottingley has always been a through-route town. Ferrybridge has had a bridge over the Aire since 1198, and the town became a coaching stop on the Great North Road, later the A1, long before the A1(M) bypassed it. Today the M62 passes close to its southern edge, where the new homes off Womersley Road are bordered by the motorway, a railway line and a manufacturing site. Gardens near busy roads and railway lines often need a fence that does more than mark a line. A solid, taller boundary can screen the garden from passing traffic and make it feel less overlooked. It will not make a road silent, but it can make a garden feel far more sheltered and private. Planting a hedge or climbers along the inside of a fence can soften it and add a little extra screening over time. When we visit, we can talk through heights and styles that suit where your garden sits.
Limestone, wet ground and fence posts
What lies under the garden matters for a fence. Parts of Knottingley sit on limestone that can still be seen in rock faces along the Aire and Calder Navigation, and the stone was quarried in the town; a quarry in the grounds of Knottingley Old Hall opened in 1830. Where rock sits close to the surface, getting a post hole to the right depth takes more effort, and around old workings the ground can be uneven and mixed. On heavier, damper ground nearer the river, the concern is posts standing in wet soil for months at a time. Either way, the ground shapes how a fence is put in and how long it lasts, which is why we look at the site before giving you a quote.
New-build boundaries
The newer estates on the southern edge of town, off Womersley Road and Common Lane, are bringing hundreds of new gardens to Knottingley. The fence a builder puts up is often lightweight, and it rarely gives the privacy people want once they are living there. Some plots also come with an open side or front; if that was left open on purpose, your deeds may say whether it can be fenced, so check those first. A taller fence along the back, a gate at the side or a matching run shared between neighbours are the usual upgrades worth discussing. Gardens on the edge of an estate may back onto fields, hedgerows or open space, where a fence also has to cope with wind and growth pushing through from the far side. Upgrading the fence is a good moment to think about the rest of the garden, and if a patio, path or new lawn is on the list, have a look at landscaping in Knottingley so both can be planned together.
Listed homes and shared fences
Knottingley and Ferrybridge have eight listed buildings, all Grade II, ranging from two churches to a former toll house and a building from the old Ferrybridge A power station. If your home is listed, speak to Wakefield Council before changing any boundary. For most homes, the practical question is a shared fence. Before the old one comes down, talk to your neighbour about what will replace it, where the posts will go and which way it will face, and check your deeds if you are unsure who owns the boundary. Sorting that out first saves awkward conversations later.
Clearing the line and getting a quote
If the old fence has vanished under ivy, bramble or overgrown hedging, the boundary needs clearing before anything can be measured properly, and a garden clearance in Knottingley can come first. When you are ready, ring 07347 572509, Monday to Friday between 9am and 6pm. Photos of the boundary and a rough length are a great help. We will come out, talk through the options and give you a quote. There is more detail on our main fencing page, and everything else we do here is on our Knottingley page.
