Garden clearance in Knottingley
Affordable Gardens & Landscapes is a family run, fully insured business based in Knottingley, so a garden clearance here is a job in our own town, and we cover the whole of Knottingley and Ferrybridge. Together they are home to around 17,000 people, in everything from older houses near the river to the new estates growing on the southern edge of town. A clearance often comes at a turning point: moving into a house where the garden has been neglected, getting a property ready to sell or let, or helping a relative whose garden has become too much. Whatever the reason, the job is the same. We cut back what has got out of hand, deal with the brambles, nettles and weeds, and take all the garden waste away so you are left with a space you can use again.
How quickly growth takes hold here
You only have to look along the canal to see how fast things grow in Knottingley. The old limestone faces beside the Aire and Calder Navigation are a recorded local geological site, yet around Jackson Bridge they are now largely overgrown, and brambles and nettles make some of the rock hard to reach. These are the same plants that take over any neglected garden. Brambles arch over and root where their tips touch the ground, bindweed climbs through hedges and fences, ivy adds weight to an old fence until it gives way, and nettles creep outwards underground. A garden can go from untidy to impassable faster than most people expect, and the longer it is left, the deeper the roots go.
Gardens near the river and canal
Knottingley grew up on the River Aire. Before the Aire and Calder Navigation was built in 1704 and widened in 1826, the town was the last navigable point on the river, and boat building carried on here into the 20th century. Gardens close to the water can border scrubby, unmanaged ground that keeps feeding growth back over the fence. Clearing them properly means cutting back to the true boundary, pulling out the growth that has crept underneath the fence and clearing the base of any hedge, not just mowing what is left of the lawn. Cuttings from a waterside garden should never be tipped over the back fence onto the bank, however tempting, because they smother what grows there and spread garden plants into the wild; taking them away is part of the job. If your garden runs down towards the water, tell us when you call, as wet ground affects how and when the work is best done.
Older gardens and what lies beneath
Parts of Knottingley sit on magnesian limestone, and it was quarried here in the past. During the sieges of Pontefract Castle, Oliver Cromwell probably stayed at Wildbore House in the town; the house was later demolished and its land quarried for the limestone beneath. In some older gardens, that history can mean stony ground, old walls and uneven levels hidden under the growth. Older properties near the town centre and St Botolph's Church can also have walls or steps worth keeping, so we work carefully around anything that looks original. A careful clearance often uncovers paths, steps and edging that have been lost for years, which gives you a much clearer idea of what the garden could become, whether that is simply a tidy lawn again or the start of something bigger.
Timing and what happens on the day
The best window for a heavy clearance is usually February or early March, when growth is dormant, the layout shows through and nesting has not started. September and October come a close second. At other times of year we look through hedges and dense shrubs for nests before cutting. If you are clearing ahead of a sale or a new tenancy, leave a little time before photos or viewings so the lawn can recover. On the day, we cut the long grass, reduce hedges and shrubs, root out bramble and load the lot up to take away, so the only thing left behind is the garden itself. One customer summed it up: “cleared our very overgrown gardens very happy with the service very hardworking polite team”.
