Garden clearance in Rothwell

Rothwell is a small town in the south-east of the City of Leeds, between Leeds city centre and Wakefield, and its gardens tell the story of how it grew. Short rows of Victorian terraces sit close to the town centre, Edwardian villas and inter-war semis line the roads near Springhead Park, 1950s council estates spread north of the centre and private estates from the 1970s onwards fill the outskirts. Whichever kind of garden you have in LS26, if it has got away from you, a clearance gets it back.

We are a family business from Knottingley, fully insured, and we cover Rothwell for garden clearance and tidy ups. Overgrown gardens are cut back and cleared, and the garden waste is taken away, so you are left with a clean slate to enjoy, maintain or redesign.

Small yards and terraces near the town centre

Leeds City Council's conservation area appraisal notes that 19th-century workers' housing in Rothwell mostly took the form of short rows of through-terraces, with Hargreaves Street and Clayton Street at the east end of Marsh Street as good surviving examples. Gardens behind homes like these are often compact, and access can be the trickiest part of the job. There may be no side passage, so cuttings have to come out through a back gate onto a lane or, now and then, through the house.

Clearing a small yard well is about method. Growth is cut and bagged as we go, so the space never turns into a tip, walls and paving are uncovered without damage, and the waste leaves by whichever route causes least mess. If your only access is through the house, tell us when you call so we can plan for it.

Villas, semis and front gardens in the conservation area

Much of Rothwell's historic core and its leafy older suburbs sit within a conservation area, first designated in 1976 and reviewed in 2010. The appraisal picks out boundary walls, hedges and front gardens as important to the character of the town, with low stone or brick walls often teamed with iron railings, and privet hedges a distinctive boundary on early 20th century suburban roads such as Park Lane and Sandybank Avenue.

That shapes how a clearance is done. An overgrown front garden on these streets usually has a hedge or a wall worth keeping, so a tidy up here means cutting back hard enough to restore the line without losing the hedge altogether. Privet in particular recovers well from a firm cut, and once it is back in shape, a couple of trims a year keep it neat.

Trees, and what a clearance does not include

Tree surgery and felling are not part of what we offer. A clearance covers brambles, nettles, overgrown shrubs, hedges, long grass and weeds. That distinction is worth knowing in Rothwell, because the appraisal says mature trees in private gardens often have wider value to the townscape, and within the conservation area most work to trees has to be notified to the council, which then has six weeks to decide whether to impose restrictions. If an overgrown garden includes a large tree, we clear around it and the tree can be dealt with separately.

Estates north of the centre and on the edges of town

The appraisal records that large council estates were built north of the town centre in the 1950s, and that private estate housing spread across the outskirts from the 1970s onwards. More recently, homes have gone up on the former St George's Hospital site off Wood Lane, where the old workhouse clock tower still stands. Gardens on these estates tend to be a more regular shape, with a lawn, a border and a fence at the back, and a clearance is usually about grass that has grown far too long, borders lost to weeds and shrubs that have swallowed a path. Gardens backing onto allotments, open land or the country park on the former colliery site can need extra work along the boundary, where growth creeps in from the other side.

Booking a garden clearance in Rothwell

The quieter months suit a big clearance: with the leaves down and the growth dying off, there is less bulk to cut and you can see what you are working with. To get started, call 07347 572509, Monday to Friday between 9am and 6pm, and tell us roughly how big the garden is, how long it has been left and how we get in. One Facebook review sums up the kind of job we do: "cleared our very overgrown gardens very happy with the service". You can then ask for a quote.

Once the garden is back under control, regular garden maintenance in Rothwell keeps it that way. Read more about our garden clearance and tidy ups on the main service page, or see all our local services on the Rothwell area page.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Plenty of Rothwell's older homes, such as the short rows of through-terraces near Marsh Street, have small back yards reached only through a back gate or the house itself. We bag the cuttings as we go, keep the route clean and plan the way out before we start, so the garden waste leaves with as little mess as possible. Tell us about the access when you call 07347 572509, and you can then ask for a quote.
