Garden clearance in Normanton, start to finish

A garden rarely gets overgrown overnight. It is usually a season or two of being too busy, a house move, a tenancy ending or a relative who can no longer keep on top of things. By the time you pick up the phone, the grass is knee high, brambles have crept along the fence and nobody is quite sure what is underneath. Affordable Gardens & Landscapes is a family run, fully insured business based in Knottingley, and Normanton is one of the towns we cover for clearance and tidy up work. Everything gets cut back and cleared, the garden waste goes with us, and you get back a space you can actually use.

Older gardens around All Saints and the High Street

Wakefield Council designated a conservation area in Normanton in 1975, centred on All Saints Church and the southern end of the High Street. Its boundary takes in the old churchyard, runs along the back of the first houses on Snydale Road, includes the old market cross by Castleford Road and follows the High Street down to Princess Street. Gardens in that part of town can hold old boundary walls, long established shrubs and trees that have stood there far longer than their owners.

That changes how a clearance is done. The council's designation notice placed controls on the felling, topping and lopping of trees within the area, so where an overgrown corner has a tree in it, the brambles, ivy and self-seeded growth are cleared from around it and the tree itself is left alone. If a tree there needs attention, speak to Wakefield Council and a tree specialist first. Old walls get a gentler approach as well: ivy and creeping growth are eased away rather than ripped off, so loose stone and mortar stay where they are.

Newer gardens can need clearing too

It is not only old gardens. The 16 homes on Railway Terrace, beside the station, were built with rear gardens on land that had stood vacant for around 20 years after an earlier housing estate was demolished. Any garden made on ground with a history like that deserves a proper clearance rather than a quick strim when it gets out of hand, because the growth that comes back first is usually the toughest: couch grass, brambles and bindweed rooting into whatever sits under the topsoil. Pulling those out properly, with as much root as possible, gives the garden a far better start than cutting the tops off and watching them return within a month.

What happens on the day

We start by walking round with you and agreeing what stays. That might be a rose you are fond of, a fruit bush, a shed you want to keep or a path you know is under there somewhere. Then the long grass and weeds are cut down, brambles and nettles are pulled, hedges and shrubs are brought back to a shape you can manage, and every bit of cut material is bagged or loaded and taken away. Sof Mcg summed it up in a review: "They cut everything back and cleared all of the garden waste away." The garden is left tidy, with no heap of cuttings in the corner for you to deal with afterwards.

Once the growth is off, problems that were hidden often show up, such as a rotten fence panel or a post that has started to lean. If that happens, you can talk about fencing in Normanton at the same visit rather than arranging a separate one.

Timing a clearance

Autumn and winter suit a big cut back. Growth has slowed, the shape of the garden is easier to see, and the RSPB recommends cutting hedges between 1 September and 28 February to avoid nesting birds. March to September is the main nesting season, and it is against the law to damage or destroy a wild bird's nest while it is in use or being built. Clearances in spring and summer still go ahead, but hedges and dense shrubs are checked first and any section with an active nest is left until the birds have gone. If you want the garden ready to use by summer, a clearance in late winter leaves the most time to get it planted or turfed before the warmer weather arrives.

Getting a quote

Call 07347 572509, Monday to Friday between 9am and 6pm, and tell us roughly how big the garden is, how long it has been left and how we get into it. Access matters: if there is no side path and everything has to come through the house, we need to know before the day. A few photos help as well. There is more about the service on our main garden clearance and tidy ups page, and a summary of everything we offer in Normanton on the town page. Once the garden is back under control, regular garden maintenance in Normanton stops it getting that far again.

Frequently asked questions

Clearing long grass, weeds, brambles and overgrown shrubs is ordinary garden work. Trees are different. When Wakefield Council designated the conservation area around All Saints Church and the southern end of the High Street in 1975, it brought in controls on the felling, topping and lopping of trees within the area. If your garden sits inside that boundary and a tree needs work, contact the council before anything is done. A clearance from us works around trees and does not include any tree work.
