Much of Outwood was built from the 1970s onwards, when new housing made the old pit village grow and merge with Wrenthorpe and Stanley. A house from that time is now around fifty years old, and so is its garden. Paths crack, patios sink, lawns thin and the original layout stops fitting the way people live. Landscaping is how a garden like that gets a fresh start, whether that means one new patio or a complete garden makeover.
Affordable Gardens & Landscapes is a family run, fully insured business based in Knottingley, offering landscaping in Outwood for homes and commercial customers. The aim is simple: turning your outdoor space into something you can enjoy.
What landscaping covers
The work takes in turfing, artificial grass, Indian stone patios, block paving, gravelling, driveways, pathways and complete garden makeovers. Some gardens need only one of those; others need several in the right order. A typical makeover might clear the old layout, level the ground, lay a patio by the back door and a path to the shed, then finish with new turf or artificial grass. You can talk through what you want when we visit, and we will suggest how it could come together.
Driveways and front gardens
If you are thinking about turning a front garden into off-road parking, the surface you choose decides whether you need planning permission. For houses, the Planning Portal says permission is not needed for a new or replacement driveway of any size if it is permeable, such as gravel or permeable block paving, or if rainwater is sent to a lawn or border to soak away. A traditional impermeable surface over more than five square metres, with nowhere for the water to drain, does need permission. Because Outwood is not one of the district's conservation areas, the national rules are normally the ones that count, although planning conditions on newer estates can add their own.
Block paving gives a crisp, hard-wearing finish; gravel is quicker to lay and drains naturally. A mix of the two, with a paved strip for the car and gravel or planting either side, often suits a modest frontage.
Patios and paths
Indian stone is a natural choice for a patio behind a 1970s or post-war house, with warm tones that sit well against brick. The quality of a patio is mostly underground: a firm, well-compacted base, a slight fall away from the house so water runs off, and neat edges where the stone meets lawn or border. Older gardens can hide a surprise or two once digging starts, from buried rubble to the base of an old path, so the base is where time is well spent.
A path is worth placing where people already walk. If there is a worn line across the lawn to the gate or the bins, that is usually where the path should go. For a side return or a route through planting, a gravel path is a softer option that drains freely after rain, as long as it has a firm edge to keep the stones in place.
Lawns, soil and the Rhubarb Triangle
Outwood lies within the Rhubarb Triangle, and local history credits soot and ash left from the mining years with conditioning its soil. Whatever is under your own lawn, the ground needs preparing before new turf goes down: old grass and weeds lifted, the surface levelled and firmed, and any heavy or compacted patches dealt with. Turf then gives an instant lawn that suits a family garden.
Artificial grass suits a different kind of garden: one in heavy shade, one that takes a lot of wear from children or dogs, or one where nobody wants to mow. It still needs a properly prepared, free-draining base so it stays flat. Both options are worth weighing up on site. If you choose real turf, our regular garden maintenance in Outwood can keep it cut and edged once it has settled.
Bringing it together
A complete garden makeover works best when the boundaries are sorted at the same time. If the fence is leaning or the panels are past saving, fencing in Outwood can be done alongside, so the new patio and lawn are not disturbed later. It also helps to think about how the garden will be used through the year: where the sun falls in the evening, where the bins and bikes live, and how much time you want to spend looking after it.
